A 64-year-old man died after suffering a medical episode while in police custody in East Harlem, cops said.
Officers attempted to perform CPR on the man Friday morning when he started to have a medical episode around 12:20 a.m. inside the NYPD’s 25th Precinct stationhouse on E. 119th St. at Park Ave., police said.
EMS transported the man to Mount Sinai Hospital where he later died around 2:40 a.m.
The city medical examiner’s office was working to determine the man’s cause of death. His identity is being withheld as cops make efforts to notify his family first.
Officers responded to a veterans residence on E. 119th about two blocks west of the precinct after a report of a violent male with a weapon. Arriving at the scene, they found the man acting erratically and took him into custody for criminal mischief and menacing, police sources said.
At the precinct, the man was asked if he needed medical attention and answered no, according to sources. Five minutes later, as he was being walked to a holding cell by officers, he began suffering a medical episode.
The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division is investigating the incident.
