New York City is known as the city that never sleeps, but a new bill is asking for some of those lights to go out.
The “Lights Out” legislation would target unnecessary lighting in an effort to reduce light pollution and energy use across the city. The push was also inspired by the death of Flaco, the beloved owl who escaped the Central Park Zoo and later died after crashing into a building on the Upper West Side.
His death renewed attention on the dangers bright, reflective buildings can pose to birds, particularly during migration.
Council Member Harvey Epstein, one of the lawmakers behind the legislation, joined “Mornings On 1” to discuss the proposal and the effort to make New York City safer for birds.
