NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — Antisemitism continues to rise among New Yorkers, NYPD Data shows, following two more incidents targeting Jewish New Yorkers in the last few days.

Jewish people were targeted 181 times in the first half of the year in New York City, 56% of all hate crimes confirmed by the NYPD.

Sunday, antisemitic and racist posters were discovered by the NY Post near the Fulton and Elliott-Chelsea Public Houses. There is a controversial redevelopment of those New York City Public Housing Authority sites. 

Friday, a man was arrested after busting into Shabbat services at the Central Synagogue in Midtown. He was charged with striking a congregant and headbutting a security guard.

According to the NYPD Hate Crimes Dashboard, which covers the first half of 2026, Jews were targeted 181 times out of 325 hate crimes city wide. 

That is 56% of all confirmed hate crimes the NYPD is investigating. This data does not even include crimes during the last month and a half of this year including the posters and the Synagogue incident.  The NYPD has not posted data past June 30.

For perspective, hate crimes in the city, especially against Jewish New Yorkers, are up year-over-year, according to the Dashboard. In 2025, there were 299 incidents in the first half of of the year, with 174 targeting Jewish New Yorkers. 

Executive director of the Mayor’s Office to Combat Antisemitism Phylisa Wisdom called it “unacceptable” that more than half of all hate crimes in the city are against Jewish people.

“That is why the Mamdani administration has made an unprecedented investment in preventing and combating hate crimes, increasing funding by $26 million—nearly 887 percent. In the coming weeks, our office will release the country’s first-ever municipal strategy to combat antisemitism, laying out a whole-of-government approach to stamping out antisemitism, keeping Jewish New Yorkers safe, and ensuring they continue to be a vital part of the fabric of our five boroughs.”
