Thanks to some changes in this year’s DOE calendar, NYC students still have nearly a month before the school bell rings again, which means there’s plenty of time left for those last big summer adventures. But as quickly as summer seems to fly by, the first day of school will be here before we know it, and that means it’s officially time to start thinking about the year ahead.
And for NYC students, that back-to-school prep looks a little different than it does in many other parts of the country.
While some kids might be hopping on a yellow school bus or getting dropped off by a parent, plenty of young New Yorkers are already seasoned pros when it comes to navigating the city’s subway and bus system before they’ve even made it to homeroom.
And thankfully, getting around doesn’t have to mean adding another expense to the back-to-school list.

Each school year, New York City Public Schools distributes Student OMNY Cards to eligible students, giving them free rides on the city’s subways and buses for getting to and from school and school-related activities.
And unlike the old Student MetroCards, the OMNY cards come with a few more perks that make them useful well beyond the traditional school commute. Students can use their cards four times a day, every day of the week, all year long—including weekends, holidays, and summer break.
So yes, that means the same card that gets a student to class can also help them get across town on a Saturday afternoon. Pretty handy for a city where half the adventure is getting there.
The Student OMNY Card works all year long
One of the biggest changes from the old student fare system is just how flexible the cards are.
According to NYC Public Schools, Student OMNY Cards can be used:
Up to four times per day
Seven days a week
At any time of day
All year long, including summer
For travel to and from school and school-related activities
Students can also receive a free transfer between the subway and local, limited, or Select Bus Service, as well as between buses.
In other words, students aren’t restricted to using their free rides only during school hours or on school days. The card is designed to give eligible students considerably more freedom to navigate the city.

How many free rides do NYC students get?
Student OMNY Cards provide four free trips per day, along with transfers.
That distinction is important for students making longer commutes across the five boroughs. A subway ride followed by an eligible bus transfer, for example, can be covered without requiring an additional paid fare.
And because the card can be used every day of the week, students aren’t left with a transit pass that suddenly becomes useless once Friday afternoon rolls around.
Who gets a Student OMNY Card?
Student OMNY Cards are distributed by New York City Public Schools, rather than directly by the MTA.
Students and families don’t need to head to a subway station to apply for one. If a student is eligible, their school handles distribution, and families can contact their school’s Parent Coordinator with questions about getting a card.
The cards are valid through the school year and summer, so students should hold onto them rather than assuming they’ll need a new one every few months.
What happens if you lose your Student OMNY Card?
Because, well, it wouldn’t be NYC school transportation without at least one frantic “where did I put my MetroCard?” moment.
If a Student OMNY Card is lost, stolen, or damaged, students should let their school know as soon as possible. The school can deactivate the old card and provide a replacement.
Students are also entitled to a free replacement card if their original is lost, damaged, or stolen.
And there’s another helpful provision for school-approved activities: students can request an additional two-trip OMNY card when needed.

What if the card isn’t working?
If a Student OMNY Card doesn’t work when tapped, students can first ask a station agent or bus operator for help. If the issue isn’t resolved, the card should be returned to the student’s school so a replacement can be issued.
The cards also aren’t something students can simply pick up from the MTA—their school is responsible for distributing them.
So, as the city gets ready to send students back into classrooms, there’s one less back-to-school expense to worry about. Whether it’s a daily commute from Queens to Manhattan, a bus ride across Brooklyn, or a weekend trip to meet friends, eligible NYC students have a little more freedom to get around the city—and four free rides a day to help them do it.
