by Several hundred readers are needed to reach the goal of a live reading of the entirety of Robert Caro’s weighty work “The Power Broker.” The dense and authoritative volume, published in 1974, tracks the rise of Robert Moses and his extraordinary impact on the physical infrastructure of New York.
Judgy Baby, a new multipurpose venue located in Gowanus, will host the marathon reading session this fall. While the event itself is months away, a call for volunteer readers is already going out to make sure the ambitious goal can be reached. Organizer Brad Vogel, poet, local activist, and director of special projects at the new venue, had the idea for a marathon reading after leading a Center of Fiction reading group focused on the massive work, he told Brownstoner.
The ambition for the new effort is to make it through the entirety of the more than 1,100-page book between November 12 and November 15. More than 350 readers are needed. Volunteers can sign up online for a 10-minute reading session and indicate what days their vocal skills are available, including whether they are willing to read aloud in the wee hours or at the crack of dawn.
Full details on the marathon session will be released closer to the event date. Judgy Baby, which hosted its first event in May, is located in the individually landmarked Montauk Paint Manufacturing Building at 170 2nd Avenue in Gowanus.
