New York City could make a major change to the way trash is collected across the city, with Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration exploring a new curbside system. The plan would use top-loading garbage trucks instead of side-loading trucks, and the Department of Sanitation has been working to get trash bags off sidewalks and into containers. Streetsblog says top-loading trucks could reduce extra miles, driving mileage, emissions, and operating costs, while the department is developing a pilot truck built to its specifications. The containerization rollout remains a major city initiative, with citywide containerized trash collection planned by mid-2032 and full enforcement of official NYC Bins beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
