STATEN ISLAND N.Y. (PIX11) — A site that was a former garage for the New York City Department of Sanitation in Staten Island will be transformed into a complex that will include affordable housing, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Tuesday.
The equipment that was formerly housed in the garage, located at 539 Jersey St., is being transferred to a brand-new facility located at Fresh Kills.

Replacing the garage will be a new complex that will include 232 affordable homes, public open space, and a grocery store, according to city officials.
“The new Fresh Kills complex will strengthen the services Staten Islanders rely on, from trash collection and street cleaning to snowplowing and salt spreading,” said Mamdani. “And by moving these operations, we’re making way for hundreds of new affordable homes, public space and a grocery store.
By relocating Sanitation operations to the brand-new facility, heavy truck traffic will be reduced around the location where the garage formerly stood. In the end, pedestrian safety will be improved, while congestion and noise are reduced, according to the mayor’s office.
