Earlier Wednesday in Westchester County, Democratic lawmakers and others urged New York Gov. Kathy Hochul to sign the so-called “Traveling with Dignity Act” (S.4042A/A.6219B), which provides for height adjustable adult changing tables at large public facilities like AppleGreen rest stops, sports stadiums and museums.
The tables help people who are living with disabilities do what every other person on the planet does: go to the bathroom. Without the help of an adjustable table, caregivers are forced to change adults on the floor of a public restroom, or in the back of a vehicle.
The legislation passed both houses of the legislature this year and now awaits the governor’s signature.
“This commonsense legislation will provide safer, more sanitary spaces for caregivers and family members assisting adults who need support. I’m proud to have worked with my colleagues and the many incredible disability advocates to pass this bill, and I look forward to seeing it signed into law,” Westchester area state Sen. Pete Harckham stated.
Harckham is the bill’s sponsor in the Senate. He discussed how the bill builds on the Americans with Disabilities Act on Capital Tonight.
