Authorities are investigating a wild crash in Manhattan that left at least two people hurt.
Surveillance video of the Thursday morning Inwood accident is jarring. A home security camera focusing on the intersection of West 204th Street and Sherman Avenue showed a black Mercedes-Benz SUV suddenly come flying backward into a block of parked cars, crashing over two of them before landing on its side on the sidewalk.
A speeding Corvette driver had hit the Benz, authorities said. While the SUV flew backward, the Corvette went careening into a 34-year-old man on the sidewalk before crashing into a building.
The pedestrian was flung off his feet from the impact. His family said he was in the hospital with a broken leg, but was recovering. The driver of the Corvette was ejected but was also expected to survive.
Cops said the occupants of the Benz ran from the scene before police arrived. Security cameras showed them trapped inside the SUV after the crash, banging on the window repeatedly until a building superintendent came to their rescue.
“I broke the sunroof and I pulled them out and when I pulled them out they left,” said witness Jorge Martinez.
Neighbors said they couldn’t believe that no one was killed, and more people weren’t hurt, given what they saw of the accident. They also say speeding cars are a constant problem in the area.
Later Thursday, police arrested Eric Torres on charges of reckless endangerment, reckless driving and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. Attorney information for the 27-year-old was not immediately clear.
An investigation is ongoing.
