New apartments in Queens have experienced a 16-square-foot increase in average size from 2016 to 2025.

While new apartments in Queens have experienced a large increase in the average square footage over the last decade, they still rank towards the bottom nationwide, according to a report by RentCafe.
Since 2016, Queens apartments have risen 2% in average square footage, from 716 in 2016 to 732 in 2025. The 16-square-foot increase marked the fifth-largest jump among all 100 cities included in the study.
Despite the big boost in square footage, Queens ranked 94th out of the 100 cities. It was well behind Tallahassee, Florida, which took the number one spot in average square footage for new apartments, at 1,156 square feet.
Queens was one of three New York City boroughs to appear on the list, and the only one to experience an increase in average square footage over the last decade.
Manhattan ranked 93rd on the list, one spot ahead of Queens, with new apartments there averaging 735 square feet, one square foot lower than the 2016 average.
The third and final New York City borough to appear on the list was Brooklyn. The average square footage in this borough fell from 720 square feet in 2016 to 714 in 2025, ranking 97th on the list.
All three New York City boroughs to make the list had a square footage that was well below the 2025 national average of 910 square feet. This new national average represents a slight drop from 2016, when it was 920 square feet.
