ALBANY, New York (WWNY) – Things are not good between Canada and the U.S. these days.
Canadian visitation to New York State fell more than 26 percent in 2025.
The Hochul administration is trying to change that, at least a little.
Governor Hochul announced a NY LOVES CANADA promotion this morning.
There are deals for Canadians traveling to New York, deals on attractions and lodging. Savings vary, but in general, they’re trying to offset the currency exchange rate which has devalued Canadian money in the U.S.
“New York and Canada are neighbors by geographic destiny, but we are friends by choice, and we want our Canadian companions to know that they are welcome in New York State,” Hochul said in a statement.
Canadian and American relations have hit a low during the second Trump admininstration, with the president musing about Canada becoming the 51st American state and threatening punishing tariffs on many Canadian goods.
(As of this writing on Friday, August 21, Canada is under the gun to accept the terms of a U.S. trade deal by early Saturday, or face a 50 percent tariff on about 20 percent of Canadian exports to the U.S.)
Many of the promotions run through the end of summer, August and September. Some promotions are in force through December.
