A new $230 million Department of Sanitation complex has opened at Fresh Kills on Staten Island. The facility brings 2 sanitation districts together in one modern location, with rooftop solar panels and salt storage for up to 2,000 tons. Its opening clears the way for 232 affordable homes, public open space and a grocery store on the North Shore. The complex supports trash collection, street cleaning, snow removal and round-the-clock operations for Staten Island residents. Officials said the relocation should reduce heavy truck traffic, improve pedestrian safety and cut congestion and noise. The new garage will include a plaque honoring former sanitation worker Vincent Guglielmino, who died in 2004.
