New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has sued to block a City Council law providing $10,000 bonuses to New York City school teachers’ aides. Mamdani asserts that this legislation violates collective bargaining laws.
$10K Bonus Sparks Legal Fight
Mamdani announced his lawsuit on Wednesday. The contentious RESPECT Check Act, which was unanimously approved by the City Council in mid-July, offers a $10,000 “workforce stabilization” bonus to each school paraprofessional in New York City. Despite the Act’s veto-proof majority of 47 co-sponsors, it has been met with disapproval from the Mayor’s office.
Don’t Miss:
Matt Rauschenbach, a spokesperson for Mamdani, stated, “We will not allow the political process to replace the collective bargaining table.” He argued that the legislation undermines collective bargaining by letting politicians dictate employment terms without consulting workers or unions, setting a dangerous precedent.
The lawsuit has set Mayor Mamdani’s office against City Council Speaker Julie Menin, the NYCCLC and UFT, all of which supported the bill.
UFT President Michael Mulgrew defended the bill, saying the City Council would not have passed an illegal measure and the union would not support anything threatening its collective bargaining rights.

Mamdani’s Funding Fights Take New Turn
Mamdani supported an earlier version of the measure in 2025 that would have made the $10,000 bonus recurring annually. The final law guarantees the payment for only one year, with renewal possible unless a union contract provides paraprofessionals an equivalent raise, in which case the law would be repealed.
This lawsuit comes in the wake of the Mayor’s previous clashes with wealthy individuals over public spending and city funding. In May, Mamdani had a public disagreement with Amazon.com Inc. founder Jeff Bezos over the issue of wealth, taxes, and public services funding. Bezos had claimed that even if his taxes were doubled, it wouldn’t assist teachers in Queens, to which Mamdani responded, “I know a few teachers in Queens who would beg to differ.”
