MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. — A man who was taken into custody by police after a search earlier this month in connection with the death of his father was charged Friday with five felonies, including arson and second-degree murder, state police said.
Thomas Ryan, 32, was captured on Aug. 9, following a multi-day search resolved in part thanks to tips from the public. Ryan was wanted in connection with the death of his father, Robert Ryan, 70, according to authorities.
The body of the elder Ryan was found at his residence on Greenville Turnpike in Greenville in Orange County after a fire erupted in the house before 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6. A preliminary investigation revealed the fire was deliberately set, state police said.
Ryan was transported to a hospital after his arrest to be treated for injuries unrelated to the police search, which delayed filing charges, police said.
Ryan was medically cleared from the Westchester Medical Center on Aug. 13 and returned to police custody, where he was subsequently charged with five felonies relating to the house fire and death of his father, according to an Aug. 21 update from state police.
Thomas D. Ryan, 32, was charged with second-degree murder, third-degree arson, tampering with physical evidence, concealment of a human corpse and fourth-degree grand larceny.
Ryan was arraigned at Orange County Centralized Arraignment and remanded to the Orange County Jail.
