In recent years, the over-styled entryway has risen to prominence. Homeowners are increasingly incorporating furniture, rugs, wallpaper, and artwork to create a striking first impression of their homes. Though this approach can be beautiful, it can also be crowded. Cardi B shows how sometimes, simple design can be the best first glimpse.

After purchasing the home in late 2021 with then-husband Offset, the rapper took to Instagram to share the entryway of her New York City mansion, where twin curved staircases speak for themselves. (Critics have pointed out that what she refers to as her ‘NY home’ is, according to property records, actually across the river in Tenafly, New Jersey, but when the design is this beautiful, who could complain?) Black iron railings stand out in sharp relief against the cream steps, highlighted by recessed lighting. Light wood flooring provides a touch of the natural world. The overall effect is beautifully dramatic.

In the caption, Cardi explains her rationale for purchasing the property stating: ‘These days I don’t just live one place, I’m everywhere due to my work. One thing for sure I needed a home in my home city of NY.’ The simple, minimalist design seems to reflect this desire for reprieve and reconnection with family in the midst of her busy life.

Maximalists, cover your ears, but Cardi has a point with her totally uncluttered and pared-back entryway. So, how does she make her architecture shine? Much of how striking the swooping angles of the space looks comes down to her simple color scheme: black and white.

New York-based interior designer Nina Lichtenstein explains: ‘There’s something undeniably powerful about a black-and-white entryway. It’s a classic palette that transcends trends, eras, and even architectural styles. The moment you cross the threshold into a space defined by this timeless contrast, you’re greeted with an air of sophistication that’s as bold as it is balanced.’

As in Cardi B’s white hallway, this combination feels so striking because it reaches the ideal equilibrium between drama and restraint. ‘The combination feels confident, organized, and intentional, instantly setting the tone for the rest of the home,’ explains Nina. ‘It whispers luxury without shouting, and depending on how it’s styled, it can lean toward tailored minimalism or old-world glamour.’

Furthermore, whether you have a modern home like Cardi, or a more traditional house, this palette will suit your entryway. Nina states: ‘This palette works effortlessly across a wide range of design styles. In a modern or contemporary setting, black-and-white emphasizes clean lines and geometric form, often paired with sleek finishes and sculptural lighting. In a more traditional home, the duo feels heritage-rich. Picture black-and-white checkerboard floors, intricate millwork in high-contrast paint, and brass fixtures that add warmth. It also complements transitional, art deco, farmhouse, and even industrial aesthetics with equal finesse.’
