A late-night shooting in Brooklyn has left an Indian national dead and sparked a police manhunt in New York, while Indian diplomatic officials have stepped in to assist the victim’s family.
The victim, Gurdeep Singh, was fatally shot during an incident in the East New York area of Brooklyn on Friday night. Investigators are still trying to piece together the circumstances that led to the killing, with no arrests made so far.
Fatal shooting in East New York
The shooting took place near Stanley Avenue at around 10 pm local time, according to authorities.
Emergency services were called after reports of gunfire in the area. When officers arrived, they found Singh with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was rushed to hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.
Singh was a resident of Queens, one of New York City’s five boroughs.
Indian Consulate extends support
The Consulate General of India in New York expressed sorrow over Singh’s death and said it was in contact with his family.
In a statement posted on X, the Consulate said it was “deeply saddened” by the untimely death of the Indian national and extended its heartfelt condolences to his relatives. It added that officials were providing all possible assistance to the bereaved family during this difficult period.
CCTV captures moments before shooting
Investigators are examining CCTV footage obtained from the area as part of their inquiry.
The video reportedly shows two men engaged in a physical altercation on the street moments before a flash, believed to be a gunshot, appears on screen. The footage then shows one of the men collapsing onto the pavement while the other enters a vehicle and drives away from the scene.
Law enforcement officers continued searching the surrounding area for evidence into Saturday morning as the investigation remained active.
No arrests yet, motive unknown
Authorities have not announced any arrests in connection with the case. Police are continuing to gather evidence and review footage as they attempt to identify the suspect and determine what led to the deadly confrontation.
Officials have not disclosed whether the victim and the suspected gunman were known to each other.
