BAY RIDGE, Brooklyn (PIX11) — An unsettling chain of events in Brooklyn is under investigation.

First, a body was discovered inside a Brooklyn apartment after neighbors complained about a bad smell. Then, on Monday morning, a fire broke out in the same unit.

Video shows fire inside a building at 9949 Shore Road that broke out on the sixth floor.

The superintendent, Robert Rodriguez, told PIX11 News that on Friday, neighbors complained of a bad smell. Police discovered a body inside the apartment.

While building management was waiting for police to return and pick up the body, a fire broke out in the unit at around 1 a.m. on Monday, the superintendent says.

The victim was reportedly a man in his 70s, according to the superintendent. It remains unknown how long the man had been dead for before his body was discovered.

The death and the fire are under investigation. Rodriguez says about six units suffered water damage. The American Red Cross is helping families impacted by the fire.
