RAY BROOK, New York (WWNY) – We have new information about the suspension of five North Country state troopers.
The Albany Times Union reported Monday that sources familiar with the matter said the suspensions are related to the handling of a crash last fall.
Troop B members suspended
State police confirmed last week that five members of Troop B in Ray Brook were suspended as part of an investigation into an incident that happened last October. Troop B includes St. Lawrence County and counties going east to Plattsburgh.
State police said the administrative investigation was still underway and they could not provide more details.
Crash involved off-duty trooper’s son
The Times Union reported its sources said the internal investigation focused on the handling of a single-vehicle crash involving an off-duty trooper’s son.
The article did not say where the crash happened, but a source told the newspaper that Clinton County sheriff’s deputies were handling the matter when the off-duty trooper asked a younger trooper to go to the scene.
According to the source, state police took over the investigation and did not charge the trooper’s son. The newspaper said it was told that another trooper determined there was no probable cause to arrest the son for drunk driving.
Complaint triggered investigation
The Times Union further reported that a deputy who initially responded to the crash scene apparently filed a complaint with state police, triggering the investigation.
Sources told the newspaper that at least three suspended troopers were offered deals requiring them to serve extended suspensions, but keep their jobs. A promotion for the off-duty trooper was reportedly rescinded.
