BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — A smokey fire broke out Sunday afternoon in a ground-floor apartment at 35 Orange St., a six-story brick residential building at the corner of Hicks Street in Brooklyn Heights. The alarm came in at 3:07 p.m., according to a Fire Department of New York spokesperson.
The streets were lined with engine companies and ladder trucks, along with Emergency Medical Services vehicles. FDNY told the Brooklyn Eagle that 21 units and 79 Fire and EMS personnel responded. EMS personnel on site said that no one was injured.

Neighbors stood across Hicks Street, in front of the entrance to Plymouth Church School, to watch firefighters handle the blaze, which was under control by 3:51 p.m. Smashed windows, blackened belongings and an air conditioner hanging by a wire from a gaping window were left in the aftermath.
On Monday afternoon, FDNY inspectors were on site conducting an investigation. “No one knows what caused it,” a neighbor told the Eagle.
