WASHINGTON – As the open enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act began on November 1, Hudson Valley residents as well as people across the state, are finding their premiums are skyrocketing, and Democratic Congressman Pat Ryan (D, NY-18) said that is because Republicans in the House of Representatives have refused to address the healthcare crisis.

Ryan joined the group “Protect Our Care New York” to say the Affordable Care Act subsidies must be protected as thousands of people are already facing massive Medicaid premium increases.

“Imagine you get this letter in the mail – you are a single mom, or senior or veteran – telling you that you had been covered by the essential plan and now you’re not. And that’s 20,000 people in my district that have already received those letters,” he said. “Then, again, adding more insult to injury, we have the refusal of Republicans to extend these ACA subsidies and try to do what we can to try to keep costs down.”

“The crucial tax credits that help people in our state and across our country with their premiums must be extended at once,” Congresswoman Grace Meng, (D, NY-6) said. “It is unconscionable for hard working New Yorkers to be kicked to the curb like this,” and she called on Congressional Republicans to renew those tax credits and reopen the government. “The clock is ticking,” she said.
