MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) — In an effort to tackle some of New York City’s most dangerous housing issues, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that the most urgent Housing Court cases will now be fast-tracked, sometimes appearing in court on the same day they are filed.
The cases include buildings under major vacate orders or facing hazardous conditions, and buildings with broken elevators, no heat, hot water, electricity, gas, or water.
The mayor says tenants should not have to wait months or years for relief when their homes are unsafe.
This is the latest part of the administration’s broader housing agenda, parts of which are drawing pushback.
Like the city’s proposal last week to build almost 18,000 new homes on Staten Island.
Borough leaders say increased housing would put undue stress on local hospitals and schools and create more traffic.
Officials are reminding New Yorkers that not every Housing Court case will be fast-tracked, and that even if cases get in front of a judge faster, it remains unclear how that could impact repair times for residents.
