There’s a new source of “tribulation” headed to Broadway. 

Three-time Tony nominee Jennifer Simard, last on Broadway in a riotous turn in Death Becomes Her, will keep the laughs coming when she steps into the role of Mildred Layton in the Tony-winning Schmigadoon! next month.

Broadway favorite Simard—who received Tony nominations for Death Becomes Her, Company, and Disaster!—will succeed Tony nominee Ana Gasteyer beginning September 8 at the Nederlander Theatre. Gasteyer will play her final performance September 6.

Simard will join a cast led by Alex Brightman and Sara Chase as Josh Skinner and Melissa Gimble, with Ann Harada (Avenue Q, Into the Woods) reprising her role of Florence Menlove, Tony nominee Brad Oscar (The Producers, Something Rotten) as Mayor Menlove, Isabelle McCalla (Water For Elephants, The Prom) as Emma Tate, Ivan Hernandez (Dear Evan Hansen) as Doc, Maulik Pancholy (30 Rock) as The Reverend Layton/Leprechaun, Max Clayton (Bandstand, The Music Man) as Danny Bailey, McKenzie Kurtz (Heathers, Wicked) as Betsy, and Ayaan Diop as Carson.

Schmigadoon! ended this year’s Tony Awards tied with The Lost Boys and Ragtime
as the season’s most Tony-winning musicals, each taking four
categories. Along with its Best Musical win, the work took Best Original
Score and Book of a Musical, both for Cinco Paul; and Orchestrations,
for Doug Besterman and Mike Morris.

The musical opened April 20 at the Nederlander, and is currently
scheduled to play an extended run through January 3, 2027. Read what

Schmigadoon! was first produced as a two-season Apple
Original series. The Broadway version follows the plot of the show’s
first season, which follows real-world couple Josh and Melissa as they
find themselves in Brigadoon Schmigadoon, a mysterious and
magical world populated with characters, plots, songs, and dance numbers
plucked from Golden Age musicals like Oklahoma!, The Music Man, Carousel, and more. The adaptation—which features a book, music, and lyrics by series creator Cinco Paul—includes all of the songs from the series’ Grammy-nominated score plus some new titles, including songs cut from the series.

Rounding out the company are ensemblists Afra Hines, Becca Petersen, Clyde Alves, Jess LeProtto, Joshua Burrage, Kaleigh Cronin, Kimberly Immanuel, Lyrica Woodruff, Nathan Lucrezio, Richard Riaz Yoder, Shina Ann Morris, and Zachary Downer; Carson alternate Miles McNicoll; and swings Brandon Block, Kevin Quillon, Lauralyn McClelland, and Maria Briggs. Casting is by Bernard Telsey and Kristian Charbonier.

The work made its world premiere in 2025 at Washington, D.C.’s Kennedy Center, with series choreographer Christopher Gattelli
directing and choreographing. Gattelli is reprising his work on the

Schmigadoon!’s Broadway bow features set design by Scott Pask, costume design by Linda Cho, lighting design by Donald Holder, sound design by Walter Trarbach, and hair, wig, and makeup design by Tom Watson. Pask, Cho, and Watson also designed the Kennedy Center staging.

Schmigadoon! premiered on Apple TV+ in 2021, with a second
season in 2023 that sent its characters to Schmicago, complete with
parodies of ’70s musicals like Pippin, Godspell, and Sweeney Todd.
