Vermont and New York join lawsuit against USPS over mail-in ballot rule
Vermont and New York have joined more than 20 other states in a lawsuit against the U.S. Postal Service over a new rule governing mail-in ballots.
The rule requires states to register voters with the Postal Service, follow new ballot-envelope standards, and receive federal approval. Ballots that do not meet those requirements, or are addressed to voters missing from Postal Service lists, would not be delivered.
The attorneys general argue the rule “unconstitutionally interferes with states’ authority to administer elections” and that “it could disenfranchise eligible voters.”
The coalition is asking a court to strike down the rule and temporarily block it while the lawsuit moves forward.
