A motorist struck and killed a 61-year-old woman as she attempted to cross Union Turnpike in Kew Gardens Hills just blocks from her home in the Village Mall at Hillcrest Condominiums on the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 25.
The NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad determined that a 56-year-old woman was driving a 2010 Honda Civic southbound on Main Street, approaching Union Turnpike just before 8 a.m. As she completed a left-hand turn onto Union Turnpike, she collided with the pedestrian as she was crossing the street, outside of the marked crosswalk, from south to north, throwing her onto the roadway.
Police from the 107th Precinct responded to a 911 call reporting a motor vehicle collision at the intersection and found the victim lying on Union Turnpike with severe head trauma. EMS rushed her to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. She was later identified as 61-year-old Jing Wang, who lived less than a half mile from the intersection.
The driver remained at the scene and did not report any injuries. There have been no arrests, and the investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad remains ongoing.
