ABOUT THIS TOUR

HOME TYPE: Studio Apartment

LOCATION: Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York

STYLE: Eclectic, Scandinavian

BEDROOMS: 0

SQUARE FEET: 500

Four years ago, artist and content creator Josh Ayala (@lejoshhome on TikTok) won the New York housing lottery and began renting this 500-square-foot studio apartment in Brooklyn’s Greenpoint neighborhood. While the unit was bright thanks to huge windows and full of modern amenities, like a dishwasher, he also described it as a bit boring, bland, and sterile.

Along with being a blank slate, there was also the challenge of trying to decorate a space for personality but also for function. The small space is both his home, but also impressively, his art studio, too.

A man in a beige shirt stands beside a colorful artwork in a bright room with shelves, plants, and a wooden table.

“Living in a studio, I have to make the most of the space and find ways to utilize it to the max,” Josh admitted at the time of this house tour’s first publication. “So finding ways to hide additional seating, or getting a murphy bed that came with additional storage, or getting wall organizers for my art supplies are ways I had to undertake the challenge of working with limited space.”

Wall-mounted organizer filled with various pens, markers, and tools, with two backpacks hanging below.

The Penelope Board murphy bed from Resource Furniture is the centerpiece of the studio’s main area, and Josh went with a unit that offers not only a bed, but both open and closed storage, as well as even a workspace.

Cozy bedroom scene featuring a glass coffee table with books, a plant, and a diffuser, with a bed in the background.

“I would say my murphy bed is the most unique thing about my home. It allows me to convert my apartment into my own mini art studio where I can work on my paintings and drawings, do work and open up my space when family and friends come over. It allows me to make the most out of my small space,” Josh wrote at the time of the house tour’s publication.
