BUFFALO, N.Y. — If you’ve noticed flags flying at half-staff in New York and around the country, there’s a reason.

United States President Donald Trump ordered flags to be flown at half-staff through sunset Sept. 1 as a mark of respect for the memory of Dolly Parton.

The music legend behind beloved hits like ‘Jolene’ and ‘9-5’, died on Tuesday. She was 80. A family statement was posted to her social media page. Parton died peacefully Tuesday in Nashville, Tennessee, her publicist said in a statement. Parton died after a brief battle with cancer, her team confirmed.

The order applies to the White House, public buildings and grounds, military posts and naval stations, and federal facilities throughout the United States and its territories.

The flag will also be flown at half-staff at U.S. embassies, consular offices and other American facilities abroad during the same period.

The order directs the flags to return to full-staff after sunset Sept. 1.
