Our reporters go to the New York State Fair every year — often on most, if not all 13 days — and they’ve learned a lot over time.
Here are useful tips to have a more easygoing time at the biggest, most crowded summer party in Central New York.
Remember you don’t have to see everything in one day. Have a plan for what you want to see when you arrive, so you don’t end up walking in circles for hours.
1. Go on a weekday
On weekdays, you’ll avoid the big weekend crowds, which means you’ll avoid the big weekend traffic and big weekend lines. It’s a no-brainer. We know going on a weekday won’t work for everyone’s schedule, especially weekday workers and students. But if you have the luxury to pick your day, we can’t recommend it enough.

Reporter Steve Featherstone’s top tip is to bring Wet Wipes, or baby water wipes, to the fair.
“Don’t bring the whole brick,” he said. “Just bring a baggie of a few wet wipes and you’ll thank me later. Ever try to get sugar off your hands after eating Pizze Fritte? Or off your kids and their little faces? Forget it.”
Plus, those will come in handy if you decide to eat a messy barbecue sandwich or cotton candy cocktail. It’s the state fair — sometimes it’s sticky! Come prepared.

Never underestimate the good ol’ bus. When it comes to high-traffic amphitheater concerts and the state fair, public transit is a great choice.
“They skip all the traffic on I-690,” said reporter Emily Kulkus.
Those rides are cheap, fairly consistent and air-conditioned. Even if you miss one bus, there’s another one coming few minutes behind it. And less car traffic on the highway makes everyone happy.
4. Wear proper footwear
The fairgrounds are huge and footwear matters. Add a stroll through the parking lots, a jaunt through the midway, food stops, bathroom runs and extra steps to find your family or friends before a concert, and you can easily wear out your flimsy sandals. And heels? Forget it.
We recommend light, comfy footwear, like your everyday sneakers or flats with arch support. Nothing fancy. Nothing complicated.
“You don’t want anything heavy where you’re clomping around,” said photographer Dennis Nett. “I put in over 12,000 steps out there yesterday. You want to make sure you’re comfortable by the end of the day.”
And watch where you step, especially in the cattle barn.

Those hot summer days can feel extra warm when you’re out on the fairgrounds pavement. Bring a portable fan or neck fan if you’re someone who can’t stand being hot. Wear a hat to keep sun off your face and use sunscreen. Find shady spots to cool off near the Horticulture Building, Haudenosaunee Village and Chevy Court.
Hydration is key. You can bring in empty water bottles to the fair, and many buildings have bottle filling stations. Look near the restrooms in the Center of Progress, Dairy Products Building and Horticulture Building and you’ll see places to refill with cold water.

This will sound weird, but it can be helpful to bring an empty tote bag if you’re planning to shop, pick up free stuff or play games on the midway. If you win a small prize, put it in the bag. Stocking up on some freebies? Put them in the bag. Brought a Tupperware container or Ziplocs for any leftovers? Keep it in the bag.
7. Floss like a boss
You’re excited to eat your big steak sandwich or street corn, until you’re walking around afterward feeling gristle or kernel bits in your teeth for the next two hours. No, thank you. Bring floss or a flosser, then eat steak tips, chicken wings and sticky treats to your heart’s content.
Also? You don’t need to individually stand in line for every food stand. If you’re with friends, send one or two people to get orders for everyone from one long line, while someone else tackles a different line. Put one in charge of grabbing a table for the group. Work smart, not hard.

It’s a cute pic for social, sure, but also a great safety practice.
If your kiddo wanders off on the vast fairgrounds, they probably didn’t go far. But if you don’t find them right away, it’s important to have helpful details if you need to ask security or state police for help.
“What’s the first thing state police ask for? What they were wearing,” said reporter Emily Kulkus. “That’s why I always took a photo of my kids right at the gate, just in case.”
Better still, have the kids wear bright colors so you can quickly spot them in a crowd, in a line or on a ride, and avoid a wander-off altogether.
9. Photograph your parking spot
Adults certainly get lost too.
Let’s say you didn’t listen to us, and you drove your car to the fair instead of taking the bus. Now you’re lost in Gray Lot 12, clicking your car key fob like a maniac. Hey, there’s a better way.
Take a picture of your parking spot, and the nearest parking lot number, and see if you can get the ferris wheel or another notable structure in the shot nearby. It’ll give you helpful context later when you’re trying to find your truck with a group of friends or sugar-high kids in tow.
