Kudos to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser for publishing an article about “The Queen’s Will” play at Kumu Kahua Theatre in the second-page column usually reserved for movie and book reviews (“Theater couple have simultaneous shows,” Star-Advertiser, Aug. 21).
I encourage all Native Hawaiians, kamaaina and non-kamaaina to see this historical play.
All three actors, besides their main role, manifest at least one other character, be it a court witness, a wealthy landowner or even Queen Lili‘uokulani in her final days.
The actor, Maile Kapua‘ala, seemed to be possessed by the palace courtiers she portrayed, still grief-stricken by their queen’s death and the overthrow of their kingdom. I am haunted by her bone-cracking portrayal of a character experiencing a severe fit.
The play even gives a poke at the late Princess Abigail Kawananakoa, who apparently was one degree of separation short to the royal succession from Princess Theresa Owana Ka‘ohelelani La‘anui Wilcox Belliveau.
