An 18-year-old has died after a fire erupted inside a NYCHA housing complex Friday night in Crown Heights, according to the FDNY.
Fire officials said the blaze sparked around 7 p.m. at the New York City Housing Authority Albany Houses apartment complex at 162 Troy Ave.
At least 34 fire trucks and first responder vehicles responded to the scene, the FDNY said. When officers arrived on the scene, they saw smoke and flames coming out of the building, according to the NYPD.
Police said they found an 18-year-old man inside an apartment in the building who later died at the hospital.
Residents said it was a fast-moving fire. It took firefighters just under an hour to get the flames under control.
Police sources told NY1 that the fire was likely started by an e-bike’s lithium-ion battery.
