The U.S. Postal Service has issued a final decision to relocate retail services from the Manhattan post office to a new location within the 60442 ZIP code, according to a news release from the agency.
The current location is 185 S. State St.
The Postal Service said it has initially identified 24520 S. U.S. Route 52 in Manhattan for the new post office. “If that location is not adequate or an agreement cannot be reached with the owner”, the USPS said it will consider other sites.
The Postal Service said it decided to relocate because of a space deficiency at the current location. It anticipates providing the same services at the new location and plans to continue operations at the existing post office until the replacement facility is open and operating.
According to the news release, the Postal Service mailed a postcard asking for community input and said it carefully considered the concerns expressed in the input and in comments received from the public before deciding to proceed.
“The Postal Service is sensitive to the impact of this decision on its customers and the Manhattan community and has carefully considered community input in reaching its relocation decision,” the agency said.
The Postal Service said the decision “supports its objectives and operational needs” and noted that it is a self-funded entity that generally receives no tax dollars and must control costs through the sale of products and services.
