TRENTON, New Jersey (WABC) — Two people were killed and eight others were wounded when multiple gunmen opened fire into a crowd gathered for a block party in Trenton early Sunday morning.
The shooting happened around 12:23 a.m. on the 100 block of Locust Street. Responding officers found multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds and transported them to Capital Health Regional Medical Center by ambulance and private vehicle.
Authorities said a 33-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man were pronounced dead. The surviving victims, ranging in age from 23 to 43, were treated for their injuries and stabilized.
According to the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office, a block party attended by approximately 100 people was underway when multiple suspects approached and began firing into the crowd.
Investigators recovered more than 50 spent shell casings from the scene, which stretched across the entire block. Multiple vehicles were also struck by gunfire.
The Mercer County Homicide Task Force and Trenton Police Department are leading the investigation. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage and searching for witnesses who may have information about the shooting.
No arrests have been made. Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators.
Earlier Sunday, Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora said a total of 11 people were shot at the “large, unauthorized adult gathering.”
“You should not have to accept this as normal,” the mayor said in a statement addressing residents of the Wilbur section and East Trenton. “Your block should not become an event venue for hundreds of people without notice or authorization. You should not have to wake up to gunfire, crime-scene tape and homicide investigators outside your home.”
Gusciora also said the city will deploy community outreach teams in the neighborhood to work with residents, gather information and help prevent retaliatory violence.
