TOWN OF TURBIN, N.Y. — A man from Central New York is dead and another is recovering after a UTV crash in Lewis County, State Police say.
Troopers were called to MacKay Road in the Town of Turin around 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, Troopers say. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
When they arrived they found the vehicle had gone off the road and hit a tree. First responders pronounced the driver, Ryan Voorhies, dead at the scene.
A passenger in the UTV at the time of the crash sustained serious injuries and was transported by helicopter to Upstate Medical University, Troopers say.
In a post on Facebook, the Sylvan Beach Fire Department confirmed Voorhies was the 3rd Assistant Chief for the station.
“It is with heavy hearts and extreme difficulty that we pass along the tragic and untimely death of 3rd Assistant Fire Chief Ryan Voorhies. Ryan was fatally injured in a UTV accident last night in Lewis County. Please keep Ryan’s wife Katie, son Gabe, son Logan and his entire family in your thoughts,” the department wrote.
