TOWN OF BARKER, N.Y. (WBNG) — New York State Police and Broome County Sheriff’s deputies responded to multiple crashes on Interstate 81 north in the Town of Barker on Sunday, Aug. 30.
The incident occurred around 12:25 p.m. near mile marker 25, according to the New York State Police.
Investigators found that a northbound Cadillac in the right lane attempted to change lanes and struck a northbound Kia in the left lane.
After the impact, the Cadillac hit a guardrail and spun around, stopping and facing the wrong direction, while the Kia rolled over into the median.
The Cadillac’s driver, 23-year-old Joseph Daniel Carhuapoma Rivera of Fort Drum, was ticketed and transported to UHS Wilson Medical Center along with a 46-year-old passenger of Astoria, N.Y.
The driver of the Kia, 22-year-old Yarema Mikhaylo Duplak of Ontario, Canada, was also taken to the same hospital for evaluation.
In the aftermath of the crash, police observed several stopped motorists attempting to drive the wrong way to bypass the traffic backup.
NYSP reminds drivers that going against the flow of traffic is extremely dangerous and urges drivers to remain patient and follow emergency instructions.
