Original New York System announces reopening in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — A longtime Rhode Island dining institution is returning to Providence’s Smith Hill neighborhood.

The Original New York System will reopen at 424 Smith Street on Sept. 1. The restaurant will welcome customers from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on opening day.

“The wait is almost over, Rhode Island,” the restaurant announced on social media. “Come celebrate a Rhode Island original.”

The Original New York System first opened on Smith Street in 1927 and became known for serving Rhode Island-style hot wieners, along with local staples such as coffee milk and french fries.

The restaurant most recently operated as Baba’s Original New York System before closing on Oct. 31, 2025.

Its return was first announced in August, with the restaurant inviting longtime customers to share their favorite memories from inside the Smith Hill landmark.

Now, nearly a year after the doors closed, customers can once again take a seat at the counter and order a hot wiener “all the way.”
