NEW YORK (WBNG) — A deadline is approaching for New York families to apply for federal grocery assistance.
No Kid Hungry New York is reminding eligible households to submit applications for the Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) program by Sept. 8, 2026.
The initiative is set to distribute around $240 million in benefits to nearly 2 million children across the state, providing a one-time payment of $120 per child.
While many students are enrolled automatically, others whose schools participate in the National School Lunch Program must apply to receive the funds.
“Summer EBT can make a meaningful difference for families working to keep food on the table, especially as grocery costs continue to strain household budgets,” said Rachel Sabella, Director of No Kid Hungry New York. “If you have not received benefits automatically, I encourage you to check your eligibility and apply before the deadline.”
The application reminder comes during a period of sustained high food costs that continue to pressure household finances.
A poll from No Kid Hungry in March 2026 revealed that nearly three-quarters of New York families have had to choose between buying groceries and paying for basic needs like housing, utilities and transportation.
To qualify, children must be between the ages of 6 and 16 and receive benefits like SNAP, Medicaid or Temporary Assistance.
Families with incomes at or below 185% of the federal poverty level whose children attend participating schools must complete an application online, as should those who recently lost SNAP or Medicaid coverage.
State officials began distributing the benefits in mid-June and will continue through the end of the year. However, recipients must use the funds within 122 days of issuance, after which any remaining balance will expire and be removed from the card.
Recipients should also note that stolen benefits cannot be replaced. Families can update their PINs often and freeze their cards when not in use to protect the funds.
