Case of the killings of mother, sister & child headed to grand jury
JACKSON, Miss. —
The case against one of four suspects charged in a triple murder is now headed to a grand jury.
Despite a plea from her attorney, Mikala Young was denied bond during a preliminary hearing Tuesday before Hinds County Court Judge Johnny McDaniels.
The 25-year-old is charged with three counts of capital murder, arm robbery and burglary in connection to a deadly shooting in the Queen’s neighborhood in late June.
Thirty-year-old Erica Weathersby, her sister, 25-year-old Keyana Weathersby, and Keyana’s 2-year-old son, Camari Givens, were all shot and killed. The coroner said they were all shot at close range, including once in the head.
The defense told the court Young’s initial plan when she and Cornelius Carter, Jordan Carter and Devon Modacure went to the house on Queen Alexandria Lane was to buy marijuana. At some point, the plans changed and they decided to rob them instead. The attorney was only speaking for Young.
Police dispute that. A detective testified that the group discussed committing robbery before they got to the scene and started firing guns, which included a stolen SWAT rifle.
Young’s attorney said there is no evidence that their client touched a gun or pulled the trigger.
As she was being taken back to jail after court, Young said she was innocent and that she was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The three other men in this case are also charged with capital murder, aggravated assault and armed robbery and are being held without bond.
