Off-Broadway’s Out of the Box Theatrics has revealed the remainder of its upcoming 2026-2027 season, with workshop productions in the Building the Box and Loft series and the launch of a new reading series joining the previously announced production of the Nick Blaemire musical Soon, playing a six-week limited engagement at The Loft at St. Luke’s Theatre beginning September 30.
Completing the Loft Series season will be the U.S. premiere of Laura Waldren (This is Hell)’s Some Demon, coming to the Off-Broadway company after previous runs in London and Bristol Old Vic. Katie Birenboim (Nina) will direct the U.S. staging, set to begin April 7, 2027, and officially opening April 12. The work follows an unlikely friendship between two patients at an adult eating disorder clinic.
The company’s Building the Box series will present industry presentations of The World’s Cassette Library, by Mike Nappi, Sam Durant Hunter, and Max Sangerman; and Perpetual Sunshine and the Ghost Girls, by Sara Cooper and Lynne Shankel. Cassette Library, about estranged siblings who, following the death of their brother, discover a box of tapes of his recorded memories, will perform October 21, 2026, and is being produced with Molly Brown and Jessica Sporn.
Perpetual Sunshine—a musical featuring a book and music by Shankel and lyrics by Shankel and Cooper, will perform November 12-13, 2026. The work mashes up the music of 1920 and 2020, telling the true story of the women workers of the U.S. Radium Corporation who fought back after they were knowingly poisoned with radium.
Directors and casting for both Building the Box performances are to be announced.
The company will launch The Edit: Cold Reading Series with Alexa Junge’s Grethe B this fall, set at Hans Asperger’s real-life clinic as its team of clinicians get ever closer to a better understanding of what was then thought of as a form of schizophrenia, but is now (thanks to the work of Asperger and his colleagues) understood to be on the autism spectrum. Junge’s work centers on its 12-year-old title character and the nun at Asperger’s clinic who becomes a live-saving influence. A director and casting are to be announced.
