BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, Ohio (WJW) — Brooklyn Heights police have named their newest four-legged officer after a local “hometown hero,” according to a Wednesday, Sept. 2, Facebook post.
K-9 Jake takes his namesake from Jacob Derbin, a 23-year-old Euclid police officer shot and killed in an ambush while responding to a domestic violence call the night of May 11, 2024.

Brooklyn Heights Police Department welcomed Jake to the force on Monday, Aug. 31, according to the post. He’s expected to be officially sworn in as an officer at the village council’s Sept. 15 meeting.
“Jake is named in honor of Officer Jacob Derbin, our hometown hero. We’re proud to carry on his name and memory through our K-9 program,” the post reads.
“Jake has plenty of growing and training ahead of him, and we look forward to sharing his journey with our community.”
The police department thanked donors to its K-9 program, which made Jake’s adoption possible.

Euclid Police Department last year honored Derbin with its own K-9, named Chinook, in recognition of Derbin’s job as a Chinook helicopter mechanic while serving in the military.
Derbin became a Euclid police officer just nine months before he was killed.
He was survived by his mother, father, three brothers and fiancée.
