Baltimore young musicians head to New York to meet Roc Nation leaders
A group of young musicians from Baltimore is traveling to New York City to meet with leaders at Roc Nation, the entertainment company founded by Jay-Z.
The musicians are part of the Bar Exam, a new music program and competition that provides young people with opportunities to work with music professionals and develop their craft.
On Wednesday, the group boarded a van to New York, where they will meet with industry professionals, including Rel Carter, Jay-Z’s nephew.
“I think this is something that I’m meant to be doing and that we’re meant to be doing,” said Janie Avetta Hughes, a singer and songwriter in the program. “It’s important that we have these opportunities, and these opportunities don’t come for everyone, and I’m going to take it on.”
J.E. Green, executive producer of the Bar Exam, said, “What I hope it does is inspires them. The music industry is sometimes really tough to navigate. Getting to a place where you’re able to meet with Rel Carter or deal directly with people making decisions in a record label as large as Roc Nation doesn’t happen every day.”
