Walking tours will explore locations in Uptown Kingston relevant to the neoclassical artist’s life and legacy.
Kingston, NY – Senate House is announcing the return of its John Vanderlyn themed walking tours of Uptown Kingston, highlighting the neoclassical artist’s life and legacy. Four dates for tours are available, including September 12th and 19th, and October 10th and 15th. Each tour runs from 11:00am to 12:00pm.
John Vanderlyn: A Walking Tour of the Artist’s Life and Legacy will allow participants to explore Vanderlyn’s life by visiting key locations related to his family and artistic development. Though Vanderlyn called Kingston home, he traveled the world, painted presidents, and rubbed elbows with many recognizable names, from Senate House resident Peter Van Gaasbeek, to Gilbert Stuart and Aaron Burr. Today, his works can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Portrait Gallery, the U.S. House of Representatives, and the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. However, Senate House State Historic Site currently holds the largest collection of Vanderlyn pieces anywhere in the world.
Walking tour participants will meet at 296 Fair Street in driveway near the Robert Loughran House. The tour will cover uneven terrain, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Tours are approximately one mile of walking distance and are weather dependent. The event is FREE, but reservations are required. Afterwards, visitors are welcome to visit the museum building, where the new permanent exhibit Vanderlyn the Artist showcases even more information about the artist, including some of his original works, sketches, and artist tools on display. Admission includes not only access to this exhibit, but two additional galleries, as well as a guided tour of the original Senate House, home of the Van Gaasbeek family and where the first New York State Senate met in the fall of 1777. Admission is $7.00 for adults, $5.00 for seniors, and children ages 12 and under are free.
