It has been the safest summer in New York City in recorded history when it comes to shootings and murders, according to new NYPD data.
Major crime fell 6.6% citywide in August of this year compared to August 2025.
The subway has also been particularly safe. In the month of August, there were no murders, rapes or shooting incidents in the subway system.
Year to date, there have been approximately 5,000 fewer crimes.
The data shows murder is down 24.1%, auto theft is down 12.8%, robbery is down 11.9% and grand larceny is down 5%. However, rape is up 3.2% and felony assault is up 0.7%.
In a statement, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch wrote, “These historic lows all happened while managing an unprecedented series of high-profile events, including the NBA Finals, the World Cup, Sail 250, and the largest Fourth of July celebration in the nation.”
She later added, “This progress is only possible because of the extraordinary work of the men and women of the NYPD, and I am deeply grateful for their commitment to keeping New York City safe.”
While shootings and murders are down, the data shows hate crimes are up. Year to date, there was about a 15.8% increase.
Anti-Jewish hate crimes make up about half of the reported hate crimes in New York City, and are up about 8%. Jewish people make up about 10% of New York’s population.
Of all the boroughs, the Bronx had the biggest decrease when it comes to major crime in 2026, with 2,400 fewer crimes in the area year to date.
