Speeding through a NY work zone? Cameras are watching

  • September 3, 2026

WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – Drivers who speed through state highway construction zones in New York could soon get a fine in the mail.

The state is expanding its automated work zone speed enforcement program, using cameras to catch violators without an officer present.

The cameras collect data including posted speed, vehicle speed, location, lane and license plate information.

A first offense carries a $50 fine, a second offense carries a $75 fine, and subsequent offenses carry a $100 fine. Fines are mailed directly to violators.

Officials cite recent crackdown

State Department of Transportation officials pointed to a recent crackdown as evidence of the need for the program.

During the operation, a state police undercover investigation team monitored a work zone and logged dozens of violations.

“Six speeding tickets were issued. Twenty-nine cell phone texting tickets were issued. Thirty other moving violations were issued. These locations were just two of the dozens of work zones we operate each day,” said Robert Haynes, DOT Region 7 director.

Unpaid fines could affect vehicle registration

Drivers who don’t pay their fines could face a registration hold on their vehicle, the state said.
