NEW YORK (WBNG) — UPDATE: The National Weather Service has updated the tornado count to 21.

ORIGINAL STORY: With recent storms lighting up the sky in western New York and the Southern Tier on Wednesday, the state confirmed another tornado, according to information from the National Weather Service.
Since the start of 2026, there have been 17 confirmed tornadoes that’ve touched down across the state, some here in the Southern Tier.
Wednesday, Sept. 2, saw another tornado in the Finger Lakes region.

The NWS Buffalo and Binghamton were conducting surveys on Sept. 3 in relation to the storms on Wednesday, so more tornadoes could be added based on the results.
For historical reference, from 2001 to 2025, the average number of tornadoes through September in New York was nine.
