New York City health officials have identified at least seven suspected cases of silicosis in workers exposed to engineered stone in the state, including one recent death in the city.
Healthcare providers in the state should consider silicosis when evaluating patients who work in construction or mining, or cut engineered stone, according to a notice issued Thursday by Toni Eyssallenne, chief medical officer at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
The release signals that silicosis cases are now being increasingly recognized outside of California as more states enact medical surveillance for the occupational health disease.
