LOWER MANHATTAN (PIX11) — Ahead of the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Mayor Mamdani is making official declarations to honor the day with service while also announcing a more streamlined way for the city to be prepared for future emergencies.
The mayor is declaring Sept. 11 as a New York City Day of remembrance and service, the first time this declaration has been made at the city level.
The order establishes a citywide moment of silence, calls on government agencies to hold memorial ceremonies, and encourages community service opportunities.
Volunteer opportunities will be provided through “NYC Service”, the city’s official volunteerism office. It matches families, young people, and groups with service projects accessible through 311.

A second executive order tackles emergency preparedness across the five boroughs.
The order creates a Continuity & Mission Assurance Team by several leading agencies: the Office of Emergency Management, Technology and Innovation, Citywide Administrative Services, as well as the Management and Budget Office.
The hope is that creating this team with leaders from each office will improve the city’s ability to prepare and respond to an emergency.
Some of the volunteer opportunities available include food insecurity, education, health, and environmental projects.
