MONTOUR FALLS, New York (WWNY) – 6 students at the New York State Fire Academy in Montour Falls were sent to the hospital this week due to signs of dehydration and illness.
A state spokesperson tells 7NEWS the symptoms included cramping, headache/migraine, upper respiratory illness, dizziness and congestion.
The cases happened over several days this week, and the spokesperson says, all six students went to the hospital for further evaluation.
5 students were released after getting treatment, one was admitted to the hospital, and has since been released, says the state.
The spokesperson also stated, “The safety and wellbeing of students, instructors and staff is our top priority. The Academy’s Medical Director reviewed each case and all students have been medically cleared to return to training.”
The facility is used by fire departments all across New York State to train new recruits.
Watertown stopped using it, and has since started its own training program, after Watertown firefighter Peyton Morse died while training at the state facility in 2001.
