Some storefront news out of Battery Park City
My stringer in the southern parts of the district spied the notice that Loong Ramen, which opened at the bottom of South End Avenue in January, has applied for a wine, beer and cider license. Can’t imagine they will be turned down. (There is still an empty Gristedes in that block front, which closed in January 2020.)
And Treadwell Park, which Merchant Hospitality opened in 2017 after operating a Mexican restaurant in that same spot — South West — starting in 1999, will rebrand it as Casa Oaxaca and will have an expanded bar area. That should open soon. Black Hound Bar next door is now Maison Madison with an updated seating layout. (More on that soon.)
Merchants Hospitality has left a real stamp on Battery Park City’s dining options over the years (back in the late 90s, we LOVED Merchants in Chelsea. It closed in 2017 after 25 years on Seventh Avenue). But they were forced to close Mezze on the River due to the Battery Park City Authority’s construction along the bulkhead.
Folks way downtown said it’s getting harder to access some of the local businesses, including Loong Ramen, AJ Cove Nails & Spa and Battery Park Montessori. But I checked with Nick Sbordone at the BPCA, and he said no scheduled resiliency work will directly result in any business closures.
“For the south businesses in particular,” he said, “we’re working up some new signage to make clear what business are there, and how to get to them.”
