Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani told Newsmax on Saturday that Mayor Zohran Mamdani is undercutting police work and tolerating crime as random subway and street attacks unsettle the city.
Giuliani, appearing on Newsmax’s “Saturday Report,” said random violence has become an urban nightmare and pinned the shift on City Hall.
“You have a mayor who is indifferent,” Giuliani said, referring to Mamdani. He then argued that crime has fallen nationwide since President Donald Trump took office because leaders are saying no.
In New York, he said, a 10% to 20% swing can come from tolerance alone even when police work is strong.
He praised the police commissioner as strong and said officers are doing a great job, even as the mayor undercuts them. Giuliani said the mayor “might as well get on television and tell people to commit crimes.”
Giuliani also tied recent random subway shoves and stabbings to a mental-health crisis he said has gotten out of control, even as he claimed overall crime was higher when he was mayor and organized crime was a larger threat.
On sending social workers to dangerous calls, Giuliani said a social worker “would have been killed by now.” He said his own approach paired officers with social workers and gave people “virtually no other choice” but to leave the street, rejecting any right to live on sidewalks or in encampments, a practice he said the mayor encourages.
Turning to the coming 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Giuliani said the country has forgotten wartime lessons and warned about extremist Muslims seeking political control in places such as Dearborn, Michigan, and attempting influence in New York, while stressing he does not mean all Muslims.
He said after 9/11 he told New Yorkers not to attack anyone Islamic or Arab and stood up a task force so backlash would not take hold. Thousands of Americans died in terrorist attacks, he said, and the record should not be rewritten as punishment of Islamists.
Giuliani argued that 9/11 families do not want Mamdani at the commemoration.
“If he had a little bit of a heart, even with his views, he wouldn’t go,” Giuliani said, arguing the mayor’s presence would disturb the families he called the most important people at the ceremony and that Mamdani “stands in direct support of the movement that killed their children.”
He said he and former Mayor Michael Bloomberg deferred to families on how to mark the day, and that, with the stakes still high, the attacks “could happen again tomorrow,” even with Trump in office.
Giuliani’s remarks aired as New York faces renewed focus on street safety, homelessness policy, and how the city marks the Sept. 11 anniversary.
