FRANKFORT, N.Y. — The New York State Trapper’s Association Convention brought together trappers, artisans and outdoor enthusiasts at the Herkimer County Fairgrounds.
The 88th annual event took place over three days and wrapped up Saturday. Nearly 200 dealers, local artisans, crafters and tailgaters sold trapping supplies, finished products, tanned furs and outdoor equipment.
The convention included daily trapping and fur handling demonstrations as well as trap setting contests for kids and adults. Organizers said trapping has changed over the years but remains important.
“There’s still going to be a need for trapping, no matter what because animals multiply. A lot of times the predators are gone. The mountain lions, the wolves, the bears that use to keep the beavers and things in check, so the only ones left to do it are humans,” Jim Comstock of Comstock Custom Cage said.
Attendees also participated in 50/50 and gun raffles and a Chinese auction.
