A new study from BoatBooker has just named one iconic Hudson Valley destination the best place in New York for fall boating, beating out several other popular waterfront escapes—including Greenport, Shelter Island, NYC and Lindenhurst.
Nestled in the heart of Tarrytown and shockingly close to the big apple, Sleepy Hollow is best known for its spooky history, legendary Halloween lore and charming Hudson River setting. But come fall, the village has another thing going for it: some surprisingly ideal conditions for spending a day out on the water. According to the new analysis, Sleepy Hollow had the warmest average fall temperature and lowest average wind speed among the five New York destinations studied.
So if you’re looking for a different way to experience peak foliage this year, it might be time to swap the hiking boots for a boat—and set your sights on the Hudson.
🍂 Why the Study Named Sleepy Hollow New York’s Top Spot
BoatBooker analyzed 37 US boating destinations, scoring them across five autumn seasons (2021–2025) using four equally weighted metrics: average air temperature, rainy days, solar sunshine hours, and wind speed. Warmer, drier, sunnier, and calmer conditions scored highest out of 100.
Sleepy Hollow secured 13th place nationally with an overall score of 64.25, making it the top destination in the Empire State.
Warmer Fall Days: It averaged 60.78°F across the autumn months—the highest average temperature among all five New York locations evaluated.
Calmer Waters: Sleepy Hollow posted a modeled average wind speed of 6.73 mph, easily lower than the high-wind averages seen across Long Island and New York City.
Fewer Storms: With just 20.6 rainy days on average per autumn, it offers dependable windows for cruising along the Hudson shoreline.

By Train (Metro-North): Catch the Hudson Line train from Grand Central Terminal to Tarrytown Station or Philipse Manor Station. The ride takes roughly 35–45 minutes, dropping you steps from the waterfront.
By Car: Drive north on I-87 (NY State Thruway) or the Saw Mill River Parkway for about 40–50 minutes from Midtown Manhattan.
By Water: Hop on a dedicated fall foliage river cruise departing from Midtown Manhattan’s West 39th Street Ferry Terminal.
